Our self catering holiday cottages in Teesdale are set in a magnificent, peaceful rural location with wonderful South-facing views on a riverside estate. Located in the heart of the North Pennines English countryside, near the historic Durham market town of Barnard Castle and between the villages of Cotherstone & Romaldkirk.

Both Cottages are surrounded by breath taking dales countryside and make an ideal base for walking, cycling or touring throughout the Northern & Yorkshire Dales area. The Pennine & Teesdale way are right on your doorstep and from the rear of the cottages you can see down to the magnificent River Tees.

Both cottages are part of a conversion of buildings, which formally were one of the Yorksire Schools made famous by Charles Dickens in “Nicholas Nickleby”. Dickens visited Barnard Castle in February 1838, whilst researching for his book. These two cottages formed part of the “Wodencroft Academy” which featured prominently as one of the schools in this area in 1838.

Conveniently situated within easy reach of the most beautiful scenery and historic sites, including the North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, Weardale, Hadrian’s Wall, High Force, Raby Castle, Eggleston Hall Gardens, The Bowes Museum, Kielder, Bamard Castle, Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Easy access to lovely walks direct from the cottages alongside the River Tees to the Fairy Cupboards or take a walk the other way to Wilden Wood and onto the picturesque village of Cotherstone complete with country pub and post office which is open 7 days a week.

Also at Wodencroft there are rare breed bantams, hens and sheep and an abundance of wildlife. Don’t forget your camera, and artists will find inspiring views around every corner. Private trout & grayling fishing and the occasional salmon on our stretch of the River Tees is available.
